2008 MYSA Winter Symposium
The Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) had their annual Winter Symposium February 1st and 2nd at the Sheraton in Bloomington, MN. This year’s program offered coaching and administrative sessions to assist all clubs, either big or small, and different types of coaches, from recreational to competitive.

St. Croix S.C. had several representatives: to observe the coaching sessions they included, Joaquin Izquierdo, Brad Gombold, Russell Schwoueiler, as well as myself (Nathan Klonecki). The coaching sessions focused on understanding the technical, tactical, and psychological challenges of soccer from in-house to competitive soccer players. The sessions also taught techniques to develop training sessions for all ability levels and methods to teach skills in a fun environment.

MYSA has had several changes this year. They kicked off their winter symposium with their new Coaching Director and Player Development, John Curtis. John has been a part of MYSA for 11 years and has been the associate coaching director for the past 10 years.

The first night of the symposium started with coaching sessions from several prominent people in the game of soccer including Charlie Cooke and Dr. John Thomas. Charlie Cooke, a co-founder of Coerver soccer and the Director of Coerver Coaching USA, had several training session during the weekend. His sessions included information on technical skill for youth players and elite player development. Dr. John Thomas, the Assistant Director of coaching for US Youth Soccer, had several sessions over the weekend as well. Dr. Thomas’ sessions focused on U8 / U10 activities and on having a defense strategy: defenders defend and attack out of the back.

John Curtis’ session was Incorporating the Four Pillars of Soccer. His training session was based on finding the windows of opportunity. He worked with a talented group of U15 boys and added several new ideas and concepts to the windows exercise. Check out this session on the SCSC website on the Coaches section.

The administrative sessions had useful information not only for the St. Croix S.C. organization, but for individual teams as well. Representing our club at these sessions was our Administrative Director, Donna Luttinen, as well as other team managers. They also participated in the State Cup Informational Meeting. For further information, check out the symposium materials at: http://www.mnyouthsoccer.org/events/symposia.cfm

The symposium had wonderful new information for everyone so please check it out. The St. Croix S.C. hopes to utilize this information for a successful 2008 season!

Coaches

The club is now assessing interested coaches for placement with Summer 2008 teams. Contact Nathan Klonecki, Director of Coaching, if you are interested.

The Club will offer licensing courses for all coaches who are looking for an “E” or “D” license to improve their knowledge of the game. These sessions are tentatively scheduled for March and April.

The Director of Coaching supervises all coach training, selection and evaluation.  One of his responsibilities is recruiting quality coaches.

Parents who would like to coach in any capacity are encouraged to complete licensing courses.

Pre-Game Prep

For AWAY games: You will need player passes and a completed MYSA match lineup form. Give everything to the referee before the game, and he or she will return the player passes afterward.

For HOME games: You will need cash for the referees (please have correct change), player passes, a completed MYSA match lineup form and a stamped envelope addressed to the east district director (address labels were included in your league packet you picked up at the East District Coach Meeting). Give everything to the referee before the game, and he or she will return the player passes after the game.
